6 Hiking (semi) Pro Tips

I haven’t done many big hikes but it is a huge passion of mine and it doesn’t take long to learn some major dos and don’ts.

So here are six of my tips that I came up with after completing the Great North Walk. P.S. The photos for this are shocking because they are taken from my phone, of a picture from my journal that I have kept of all of my adventures. So try and look past that to appreciate the raw advice.

Tea Bags

Bring with you a heap of tea bags as they allow you to stay hydrated and use up boiled, found, water. It also stops you from realising that you might be drinking brown ish colour water.

Early Mornings

Get up early! This is something that cannot be passed on. Start the day early and it will allow you to relax in the afternoon and not have to be concerned about setting up camp in the dark. It also puts you in a good frame of mind for the distance ahead.

Thongs (flip flops)

Practical and fashionable in one pair of shoes!! Thongs are a great to take hiking because they are something to put on your feet when you have finished the day and are strolling around camp.

Wrist Watch

It doesn’t have to be fancy! A watch is just a great tool to keep you on track throughout the day, ensuring that you are meeting your time and distance goals. In fact a cheap, simple watch is best so that you don’t have to worry about it as you hike along. Plus if its a standard watch and not a smart watch, you don’t have to be concerned with charging it all the time.

Life-straw

A ‘life-straw’ may seem like a bit of a novelty but depending on the location of your hike it can literally be a lifesaver. It allows you to drink straight from puddles of water, safely and there is no wait time like with dissolvable tablets.

Motivation

Arguably the most important tip, motivation! It is great to have a motivator to think about while walking to each place. For my dad and I on the Great North Walk it was milkshakes!!

Thanks for having a read! I hope that you take something from these tips. Let me know if you have any tips that have been a significant help for you on your one day or multiple day hikes.
